LEGO Minifigures Series 29 is on the way in May, and there’s a lot to unpack across the 12 brand new characters – including these 10 things you’re going to love…
A dozen new Collectible Minifigures are dropping next month, featuring a mix of original characters and homages to current and retired LEGO themes. Obvious highlights from an all-round minifigure perspective include the BIONICLE Cosplayer, Monster Hunter and Marine Biologist, but dig down deeper into the details across these characters and their accessories and there’s even more to discover.
We’ve just gone hands-on with these minifigures for the first time, and while you can read our full review for an in-depth look at each and every character, here we’ve pulled out 10 new things you’ll love about this series…
10 – A new instrument

The LEGO minifigure instrument repertoire is expanding once again in 71052 Series 29 thanks to the Tuba Player, who comes with a specially-moulded version of his brass music maker. This is technically not the first moulded LEGO tuba – that honour goes to the Fabuland piece released in ‘80s sets such as 3711 Pierre Pig and his Tuba – but it is the first designed specifically for regular LEGO minifigures.
9 – Two Castle-adjacent minifigures
There’s no explicit LEGO Castle-themed minifigure in Series 29, but there are two characters that you might be able to fit into your medieval setup. One is the Cute Witch, who will happily find a home in a fantasy-themed layout – you could pair her with the Hocus Pocus Cottage, for instance – while the other is the Unicorn Elf, who could also pretty easily double up as a regular princess.
8 – Nemo (sort of)

Check it out, guys: we found Nemo. Or a lookalike, anyway, thanks to the Marine Biologist’s cool new clownfish element. While we have plenty of undersea LEGO fauna the variety of fish available isn’t massive, so it’s great to see a new addition to the line-up here. Fingers crossed it’s only the beginning for our fishy friends.
7 – Lloyd like you’ve never seen him before

Remember Lloyd from NINJAGO? He’s back, in Mysterious Ronin form! This souped-up version of the green ninja feels a bit like turning all the extreme aesthetic dials to 11, and in our books that can only be a good thing. The all-over printing, dual-moulded legs and awesome hair/hood/bandana combo offer a tantalising glimpse into an alternate-universe NINJAGO – and have us wanting the rest of the gang in this style too…
6 – Niche face prints
The Collectible Minifigures range is often a great source of new and interesting face prints, particularly those that could only arise in niche or specific situations. Across 71052 Series 29 there are a handful of fun new additions, including the Chocolatier’s protruding tongue, the Tuba Player blowing into his instrument, the Trash Monster’s rotting pumpkin, the BIONICLE Cosplayer’s balaclava and the Football Goalkeeper shouting to his teammates.
5 – A steampunk-esque weapon

The Monster Hunter is one of the stand-out minifigures of this series, dialling up the Van Helsing vibes from head to toe – and that extends to the weapon she’s carrying, which combines a flame-toting pistol with a blade in a sort of steampunk-esque mash-up. It might not be the most versatile piece (although the solid colour could allow it to become a unique architectural detail), but it’s easily one of the most interesting new moulds across the entire series.
4 – A new hat-hair combo

While we’re here, it’s also worth calling attention to the Monster Hunter’s new hat-and-hair piece, which complements the rest of the minifigure perfectly and makes for a very nice addition to the growing pantheon of hat-hair combo elements. There are a couple others in this series (see the Cute Witch and Chocolatier), but this is the one you’ll probably want to stock up on.
3 – Fish bones and flies
The Trash Monster may be one of the more unusual characters in 71052 Series 29, but its real selling point is its accessories: 1x1 tiles printed with flies, and a fish skeleton that’s playfully shaped just like the regular LEGO fish element, perfect for filling up all those dumpsters around the back of LEGO modular buildings.
2 – Pretty in pink

Monochrome minifigure collectors, rejoice: the plain bright pink torso and legs are about to become much more readily available thanks to 71052 Series 29’s Boba Cup Fan, who features plain minifigure elements beneath her decorated boba cup piece.
Bright pink legs and hips have only appeared in that monochrome combo in a handful of sets and start from a couple of pounds on their own on BrickLink, while the bright pink torso and arms combo has seemingly never been released in an official set. You’ll just need to add your own hands and head, but this should make assembling a monochrome bright pink minifigure a little cheaper and easier…
1 – The first true BIONICLE minifigure

The LEGO Group briefly experimented with minifigure-scale BIONICLE figures in the mid-2000s, but the BIONICLE Cosplayer included in 71052 Series 29 is really the first true BIONICLE minifigure, from the printed torso and legs to the removable Tahu mask. Just don’t look around the back to spot the tied fabric holding the mask on to the cosplayer’s head…
LEGO Minifigures 71052 Series 29 drops May 1 (though may show up in stores sooner), priced at £3.49 / $4.99 / €3.99 per box. Get ready now by downloading Brick Search on iOS or Android and getting to grips with the minifigure scanner, which will allow you to scan the data matrix codes on the bottom of each box and identify the character inside.
