Attention, BIONICLE fans: buy your trans-pink LEGO heads now

There’s an easy way to turn LEGO Minifigures Series 29’s BIONICLE Cosplayer into a true mini Tahu – but the piece required only comes in one set, so now's the time to buy.

A chunk of the early reactions to the first real BIONICLE minifigure in 71052 Series 29 have pondered why the LEGO design team elected to turn him into a cosplayer, with a new balaclava face print that features a headband tied at the back, rather than committing fully to the BIONICLE aesthetic. But regardless of the LEGO Group’s reasons, there’s a simple fix: just swap out the head for a trans-pink alternative.

The holes in the front of Tahu’s mask will allow the pink to shine through just as it did on the original 8534 Tahu back in 2001, and because the mask is open at the back (again like the original) you’ll be able to see the trans-pink head from behind, too. There’s just one catch: the only trans-pink LEGO minifigure head is exclusive to LEGO Fortnite 77073 Battle Bus, and there are dwindling supplies available on the aftermarket.

If you don’t fancy ponying up for the full Fortnite set, your best bet is heading to BrickLink, where prices for the piece alone range from 64p to £4.65 across 17 stores (at the time of writing). Several of those stores have multiple pieces available, but only one has more than 10 in stock. In short: there aren’t a lot of these to go around. And while the head is printed with a silver and pink triangle pattern, it’s as good as it gets right now.

We’ve seen previous LEGO Minifigures series drive up the aftermarket price of certain elements, such as purple minifigure arms and hands, for which demand increased following the introduction of a purple Classic Space torso piece in Series 22’s Space Creature. There’s every chance that the same could happen again here as BIONICLE fans snap up the limited number of trans-pink heads available on the secondary market.

If you’re angling to turn your Tahu into a true BIONICLE minifigure come May 1 and the release of 71052 Series 29, best to grab the alternative head as soon as you can. Here’s hoping the LEGO Group eventually finds an excuse to introduce an unprinted trans-pink head, though – and preferably in a cheaper set.
