San Diego Comic-Con is just around the corner, and the LEGO Group will be in attendance – but don’t expect any convention-exclusive sets or minifigures.
Once upon a time, the LEGO Group could be counted on to introduce brand new minifigures (and occasionally sets) at San Diego Comic-Con, available exclusively to a handful of attendees. Some of those have since climbed to eye-watering prices on the aftermarket, such as Peter Parker in his suit from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which has now surpassed five figures on BrickLink.
It looks like the heyday of exclusive SDCC characters really is behind us, though, as The Brick Fan reports that LEGO is not one of the brands listed on the 2023 convention’s exclusives portal. There’s apparently time yet for the company to get itself on the list, but if it hasn’t by this point, we wouldn’t hold out too much hope.
The LEGO Group skipped event exclusives at a physical SDCC for the first time in 2022, when the comic convention returned after a three-year pandemic-prompted hiatus. That now doesn’t look like a one-off, but instead the turning point for LEGO SDCC exclusives.
The Brick Fan has apparently heard that the company has abandoned the concept due to its distaste for resellers, but that’s not exactly a new phenomenon for these sets and minifigures: they originally debuted in 2011, and the market was already surging by the mid-‘10s. The LEGO Group was content to roll them out until the pandemic put paid to the 2020 convention, so forgive us if we’re hesitant to take that reason at face value.
San Diego Comic-Con 2023 takes place from July 20 to 23. The first schedules for the convention are due to be published on July 5. Neither Lucasfilm nor Marvel are said to be hosting panels for this year’s event, so we’re not expecting any particularly big TV or movie reveals from Star Wars or the MCU, but you never know what might come out of San Diego later this month.
