Epic offers quick solution to LEGO Fortnite complaints after fixing glitch

LEGO Fortnite drew criticism earlier this week after Epic Games fixed a glitch that was making players’ lives a little easier – but the devs have already offered a solution.

The free-to-play giant’s new game mode is still finding its feet, having only arrived on consoles a week ago, but is already boasting record-breaking player counts. And as millions of gamers dive into the survival crafting experience, it’s no surprise that the odd glitch has come to the fore. But one error in particular has proven pretty fruitful for players frustrated with the game’s durability system.

Tools and weapons – like pickaxes and swords – will eventually degrade through use, calling to mind a similar mechanic in Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. In LEGO Fortnite, tools can be recrafted back at your home base, but going back and forth with no form of fast travel is a slog, and carrying multiple tools for long journeys quickly swallows up your inventory slots.

It didn’t take long for adventurous players to find a workaround: storing damaged weapons in a small chest and then destroying that chest returned said weapons at full health. The only cost was six wood (easily found in the various biomes) to create the small chest. And you no longer had to worry about traipsing back to base! Good times. Until Epic Games spotted what players were doing, and quickly fixed the glitch. Cue an online outcry.

Reactions to the fix on the LEGO Fortnite subreddit ranged from calling the game ‘basically unplayable’ to branding it ‘a grindy, difficult mess’. But Epic was listening, and within a day or so issued a patch buffing the max durability of all weapons and tools by 30%. Newly-crafted items will start at the new max level, while previously-crafted tools will appear more severely damaged (compensating for the higher maximum).

The player base – as you might have guessed – is divided. Some are happy to see the increased durability, but others still are calling for a true solution to the problem: the option to repair tools. One post described the 30% buff as ‘an absolute pittance’, calling for an additional 70% increase as well as a repair option, which they describe as ‘non-negotiable’. Hmm.

If you’re interested in the stats behind the durability of LEGO Fortnite’s weapons and tools – including how they scale according to rarity – check out this post from redditors Aviarn and jmaled, which breaks everything down in a series of handy tables. These numbers are apparently pre-buff, but the difference between each level and tier should be the same. Their conclusion? “The tier progression makes no sense.” Do with that what you will.

That the LEGO Fortnite team turned around a change so quickly for weapon durability is promising, at least, and suggests future concerns and criticisms will also be heard as Epic continues to finetune its Minecraft rival.

LEGO Fortnite is available to play now across all major platforms.
