The LEGO Group is finally launching a green Classic Space helmet in 2024, once again using a set inspired by China to sneak in a must-have piece for veteran fans.
Proving China continues to lead the way in the LEGO space race, the Journey to the West-inspired 80054 Megapolis City 5th Anniversary is the second LEGO set revealed at the annual China International Import Expo to bring us a brand new colour for the Classic Space helmet. 80111 Lunar New Year Parade introduced the purple variant (along with purple airtanks) in January 2023, and 2024’s first Monkie Kid model is now bringing us green headgear.
Green Classic Space astronauts originally debuted in 2014’s 21109 Exo Suit, but wearing the standard modern motorcycle helmet (with a smaller opening and visor) rather than the Classic Space version (with a larger opening and no visor). You’ll finally be able to match your green spaceman (or spacewoman) up with the rest of your Classic Space collection come January, however, when the traditional helmet arrives in green in January next year.
From the initial images of 80054 Megapolis City 5th Anniversary, it looks like only one helmet is included in the set (matching the single purple helmet in 80111 Lunar New Year Parade). Buying an entire model for that one piece is probably a bit drastic, but it’s a nice bonus if you were planning on picking it up anyway. For everyone else, a better strategy might be holding fire for now.
That’s because the purple Classic Space helmet eventually proved a little easier to get, first popping up at Pick a Brick – where it’s since retired – and then in 40608 Halloween Fun VIP Add-On Pack. The same could well happen to the green variant, allowing you to stock up on multiple helmets at once without buying 80054 Megapolis City 5th Anniversary.
There are no guarantees that will happen, of course, so it’s probably just as well that the latest LEGO Monkie Kid set looks pretty impressive all on its own. Click here to check out more images of
