Kenny Ortega confirms LEGO Friends live-action musical title as filming begins

Filming is now underway on the LEGO Friends live-action musical, and executive producer Kenny Ortega has confirmed the title of the upcoming TV movie.

An image of the first clapperboard for the shoot on Ortega’s Instagram reveals the live-action musical – the first of its kind for the LEGO Group – will be simply titled LEGO Friends: HEARTLAKE The Musical. Ortega will serve as executive producer on the film and has also penned the story, bringing his experience on projects such as High School Musical and Hocus Pocus to the table.

“An exciting beginning to many months of planning,” Ortega wrote on Instagram. “We’re off and running here in London with LEGO’s first live-action musical film for TV. Much more to come…”

The TV special will bring the LEGO Friends characters to life in live-action for the first time, and the initial press release for the musical promises ‘lively musical performances and a captivating fusion of physical and digital backdrops’. Paul Becker, known for his work on The Kissing Booth and Julie and the Phantoms, is directing and choreographing the shoot.

The story will follow a young girl who builds a world using LEGO bricks, only to find herself transported to Heartlake City. “I couldn’t be more excited to bring this story to life through song, dance, and cutting-edge technology,” Becker said in July. “We’ve got an incredible team, and we’re creating something truly special.”

LEGO Friends: HEARTLAKE The Musical will air in 2026.
