The LEGO Group has unveiled a brand new chess set coming our way later this year, and it’s the company’s most traditional take on the classic board game to date.
Literally (and fittingly) named 40719 Traditional Chess Set, the 743-piece model takes advantage of the variety of brown and brown-adjacent hues in the LEGO colour palette to conjure up a classic chess board and playing pieces. Each of the brick-built pieces represents a traditional expression of chess pieces, in contrast to previous LEGO chess sets anchored around particular themes or minifigures.
This is also a 2-in-1 set of sorts, because like many real-life chess sets it includes pieces for checkers, too. (The two games share the same board, so it makes sense just as much here as it does in regular chess sets.) The checkers are represented by simple 4x4 round tiles, which is effective right up to the point where you reach the other side of the board and need to start stacking them.
Pearl gold elements are dotted around the edge of the board to give the impression that this game is a little more upmarket, while you’ll spot details including pearl gold nanofigures atop the queen pieces. The entire thing can also split in two for more convenient storage, which is a feature we’ve seen in previous LEGO chess sets.
If you want to display it permanently, you’ll need space for a board that measures 30cm wide and deep. The pieces – 16 in brown, 16 in tan – top out at 10cm tall when placed on the board.
40719 Traditional Chess Set will launch on June 1, 2024 for £64.99 / $74.99 / €74.99.
