LEGO Mario Kart 40787 Spiny Shell Insiders reward details confirmed

The LEGO Group has confirmed that 40787 Spiny Shell will be available in the Insiders Rewards Centre, so you’ll need to shore up your Insiders points rather than claiming it as a gift-with-purchase.

Revealed over the weekend, the brick-built blue shell – the nemesis of all first-placed Mario Kart players – will go live in the Insiders Rewards Centre from May 15, where you’ll need to shell out (sorry not sorry) 2,500 points to claim it for yourself. You’ll need to have spent £312.50 at LEGO.com to rack up that many points, and you could otherwise redeem 2,500 points for just over £15 in vouchers.

40787 Spiny Shell launches day-and-date with 72037 Mario & Standard Kart, the latest 18+ LEGO Super Mario set, which will retail for £149.99 / $169.99 / €169.99. It’s slightly unusual that 40787 Spiny Shell won’t be a gift-with-purchase tied specifically to that Mario Kart set, but at the same time this does open the door to shoppers who don’t have the cash for that set at the time of release, but do have Insiders points to burn.

The Spiny Shell, better known as a blue shell, is a LEGO Mario Kart power-up that will stop at nothing in its pursuit of whichever racer is in first place at the time it’s used (so bad luck if you drop into second or third place while it’s en route – it’s still coming for you). It’s probably the most iconic of all LEGO Mario Kart items and looks to be cleverly recreated in LEGO elements here.

You’ll be able to claim your copy of 40787 Spiny Shell from the Insiders Rewards Centre from May 15 for 2,500 points, while stocks last. Upon claiming, you’ll receive a code that’s valid for 60 days and can be redeemed with any online order at LEGO.com (including 72037 Mario & Standard Kart, if you like).

Update: The LEGO Group has clarified that 40787 Spiny Shell will go live in the Insiders Rewards Centre at around 9.30am BST on May 15.
