LEGO DREAMZzz 71456 Mrs. Castillo’s Turtle Van review

One of the more striking sets in the upcoming LEGO DREAMZzz theme is the gloriously bizarre 71456 Mrs. Castillo’s Turtle Van.

A new LEGO theme has the potential to offer up all sorts of unique models, pieces and minifigures. Thanks to the original look and concept behind the LEGO DREAMZzz range, that’s exactly what builders can expect from the 11 confirmed sets available online and in stores from August 1.

One definite highlight of the forthcoming line-up of LEGO DREAMZzz models is 71456 Mrs. Castillo’s Turtle Van, a bizarre hybrid of two very different brick-based creations that, when combined together, offer up something very special indeed.

For such a prominent set, the character of sprightly old Mrs. Castillo is actually something of a minor entity in the LEGO DREAMZzz animated TV show, primarily making appearances in the waking world, with her full connection to the Dream Realm yet to be revealed. However, that hasn’t stopped the LEGO Group from creating a hybrid model based on a combination of both the burrito truck she travels around in and a giant-sized version of her companion, Señor Tortuga.

Although pitched as a 2-in-1 build, 71456 Mrs. Castillo’s Turtle Van is actually three different models in one. Construction of the set kicks off with a straightforward version of a VW-style camper van, starting with the vehicle’s wheelbase, detailed exterior and room inside for at least a couple of minifigures. The interior also boasts a few ingredients for making tasty burritos, although there’s no real kitchen area to speak of, which feels like a bit of a missed opportunity.

As well as windows at the front and back of the vehicle, the van also features a printed hourglass logo on the front grill and an opening serving hatch, with a stickered number plate and logo on one side. Additional external stickers also appear on a recipe board inside the vehicle and a menu on the outside, plus a ‘Tortuga’s Dreamcraft Shop’ sign and turtle patterns on the roof.

The top section of 71456 Mrs. Castillo’s Turtle Van is fully removable, allowing access inside and also features a two-piece awning that can be moved up and down, complete with more stickers. While it may seem like there are quite a few to be applied to the LEGO DREAMZzz model, there are really only a handful, all of which are easy to attach to the various elements, really adding an extra layer of detail to the build.

Once the main van has been completed, the story-led instruction manual for 71456 Mrs. Castillo’s Turtle Van presents builders with the option to customise the vehicle to either party or flying submarine modes. The former removes the van’s wheels, replacing them with four sturdy yellow limbs and a giant Señor Tortuga head for stability and poseability.

The turtle’s printed head has a range of movement, but sadly its mouth can’t be opened. The four legs can also be repositioned and rotated, as can the toes for all kinds of play and display possibilities. Another area where this version of the model shines is the roof section, which gains many additions including a treasure chest, a carrot on a stick to tempt Señor Tortuga, a mini palm tree and the spinning Cat Cactus also seen in 71459 Stable of Dream Creatures.

When it’s time for a change, simply remove the various elements you added to 71456 Mrs. Castillo’s Turtle Van and replace them with others to enter flying submarine mode. Here the vehicle transforms into a craft capable of diving to the depths or soaring through the sky, thanks to the addition of a roof-mounted fin, moveable periscope and chili on a stick, plus a large rear rocket engine. In this configuration, Señor Tortuga’s legs are repositioned horizontally, which also helps sell the illusion of diving and gliding.

Submarine mode also sees Cat Cactus getting its chance to shine, with a small brick-built jetpack and flame detail allowing the character to take to the skies next to 71456 Mrs. Castillo’s Turtle Van, although you will need to hold on to the prickly green feline when doing so.

As well as various building options to play around with, 71456 Mrs. Castillo’s Turtle Van includes three minifigures and two smaller figures. The first of these is Mateo, the exact same version of the character that appears in the likes of 71454 Mateo and Z-Blob the Robot and 71455 Grimkeeper the Cage Monster, although at least this time around he does gain a unique red backpack element. As well as a double-sided printed head and torso, the Dream Crafter has dual-moulded legs, his pencil staff and slimy Z-Blob companion to battle the included villainous Grimspawn figure.

The build also comes with Mrs. Castillo herself, with the minifigure only appearing in one other LEGO DREAMZzz set, 71461 Fantastical Tree House. The character boasts an impressive dual-moulded one-piece body, with printed front and repurposed LEGO Minions arms. A double-sided head and new hair element round out the minifigure, plus a brick-built staff and backpack accessories. Unfortunately, there’s no small Señor Tortuga figure to accompany Mrs. Castillo, which does feel like an odd omission.

Finally, the LEGO DREAMZzz build adds in a minifigure of Zoey, although there’s nothing new about this version when compared to her appearance in 71457 Pegasus Flying Horse and 71459 Stable of Dream Creatures. The moody character has a double-sided printed head and torso, printed legs, a unique purple hair piece and an hourglass, bow and quiver accessories.

For £42.99 / $47.99 / €47.99, 71456 Mrs. Castillo’s Turtle Van delivers a 434-piece model that accurately recreates the look of the LEGO DREAMZzz TV show version. As well as two additional build options, the set includes three minifigures and two smaller figures, packing plenty of detail, character and playability into the model.

As with many of the other LEGO DREAMZzz models, the 2-in-1 nature of the van feels as if you’re getting plenty of value for money, with a trio of play and display options on offer. Whichever version of 71456 Mrs Castillo’s Turtle Van you put together, there’s enough to look at, tinker with and rebuild that you won't feel short-changed. The same can't be said of all LEGO DREAMZzz sets.

Even if you know next-to-nothing about LEGO DREAMZzz, 71456 Mrs. Castillo’s Turtle Van still presents itself as a tempting purchase. The unique (and frankly bizarre) look of the model is definitely one of its chief selling points, with the ability to rebuild the set in multiple configurations only adding to its desirability.

Fans of the show will also be tempted to pick up the LEGO DREAMZzz model, even though the vehicle itself hasn’t made that many appearance in the animated series so far. That shouldn’t prove to be a barrier to entry though, as the completed build is sure to spark the imagination of all ages.

Similar versions of the main vehicle component in 71456 Mrs. Castillo’s Turtle Van are included in a number of currently-available sets. The likes of 31138 Beach Camper Van, 41749 Newsroom Van and 60384 Penguin Slushy Van can still be picked up at the time of this writing, although none of them include a giant turtle companion.

Sadly, two larger VW van builds are now retired, so you’ll need to turn to the secondary market in order to obtain LEGO Creator Expert 10220 Volkswagen T1 Camper Van and LEGO Icons 10279 Volkswagen T2 Camper Van.
