First LEGO 72037 Mario & Standard Kart review answers the question we’re all asking

The first review of LEGO Super Mario 72037 Mario & Standard Kart has landed online, answering the question we’ve all been asking since it was first revealed.

That question is of course: “Can Mario stand up independently of his kart?” And the answer, according to LEGO fan site Zusammengebaut’s early review, is a definitive ‘no’. The brick-built Mario is designed specifically to sit in his kart, and Andres at Zusammengebaut says that you’ll need to make skilful modifications to change him to any other pose.

As a display model of Mario and the Standard Kart, though, does this 1,972-piece LEGO Super Mario set do the job? Absolutely: Andres says it’s a ‘must’ for LEGO and Mario Kart fans, authentically recreating the starting racer from Mario Kart 8, a constant presence in the list of the top-selling video games of all time.

The kart features steering, and can also be placed on a stand to raise it slightly off the ground for more dynamic display options. And while Mario can’t be rearranged into a completely different pose, his head and arms are articulated, so you can have him look around and wave to (or throw banana skins at) other racers. The review also highlights the lack of stickers – everything is printed – and the two new pieces used to achieve Mario’s brick-built facial features.

Those include brand new moustache and nose elements, which Andres says do come across as ‘cheating’ to a degree, given the plumber probably wouldn’t have looked the part without them. But he does acknowledge that the results are ‘great’, and lands on a final score of nine out of 10 for 72037 Mario & Standard Kart. That’s a pretty convincing recommendation to pick up the model when it launches next month.

You’ll be able to get your hands on LEGO Super Mario 72037 Mario & Standard Kart from May 15 at LEGO.com and in LEGO Stores. It’s due to retail for £149.99 / $169.99 / €169.99, and debuts only weeks ahead of Mario Kart World, the next instalment in the video game series and a launch title for June’s Nintendo Switch 2.
