LEGO is about to reach a major milestone with its branded stores

The LEGO Group opened 89 new branded stores during the first half of 2023, bringing it to the brink of a major milestone for its retail network.

While high streets and shopping centres continue to suffer in the post-pandemic landscape – amid a wider cost-of-living crisis – the LEGO Group is seemingly finding success with its brick-and-mortar stores. It opened a hefty 89 new branded stores during the first half of 2023, including another official London store at Battersea Power Station, bringing the total number of LEGO branded stores worldwide to 988 as of June 30, 2023.

That means the LEGO Group is now just 12 new stores away from reaching 1,000 stores around the world, a significant milestone in the retail space. While the maths suggests a handful of stores have seemingly closed in the past six months (904 stores were open at the beginning of 2023, so five must no longer be in operation), the rate at which it’s opening new locations puts it squarely on track to hit 1,000 within a matter of weeks.

If it hasn’t already, of course – the 988 figure was from two months ago, so there’s every chance we could already be into quadruple-digit territory. That number includes official LEGO Brand Retail stores (such as those at Leicester Square, Barcelona, Fifth Avenue and so on), of which there were 187 by the end of June, and LEGO Certified Stores and LEGO Travel Stores owned and operated by retail partners.

LEGO Stores already confirmed to open in the second half of 2023 include Ireland’s second official store in Dublin, a second store in Manchester (UK), and the world’s largest LEGO Store in Sydney, Australia.
