LEGO Art 31220 Claude Monet – Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies has been officially revealed as the latest brick-built masterpiece.
Joining a long line of LEGO Art sets based on iconic masterpieces, 31220 Claude Monet – Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies has been officially revealed. Made up of 3,179 pieces and due for release on March 1 for LEGO Insiders and on March 4 for everyone else, the set recreates one of the Impressionist painter's most famous works, originally painted back in 1899.
Priced at £179.99 / $249.99 / €199.99, 31220 Claude Monet – Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies renders a vibrant nature scene out of LEGO bricks, using elements like butterflies, flowers and fruit in unique ways, reflecting the artist's love of the natural world. It comes in a brick-built frame that can hang on the wall, in line with the style of several previous LEGO Art sets.
The LEGO Group worked closely with the Metropolitan Museum of Art to create the LEGO Art set, both in terms of designing the model and now displaying it. A larger-than-life scale LEGO version of the painting will be on display at the museum alongside the original work in The Met Store from March 1.
“Translating Monet’s brushstrokes into LEGO bricks was a key design challenge,” says Stijn Oom, LEGO Designer. “The team meticulously created a tactile 3D surface by layering tiles and plates in both vertical and horizontal directions, mimicking the brushwork and carefully adapting Monet's subtle palette of hues within LEGO’s signature colour options.
"Reimagining the nuance of the original work in LEGO bricks required certain elements of the work to be abstracted, all while preserving essential details of the composition to evoke Monet’s signature artistic style. The build transforms with viewing distance: individual pixels and textures are visible up close, resolving into a peaceful Impressionist landscape from afar, mirroring the nature of Monet’s later works."
Some features of Monet's style have been carefully recreated in the building techniques of 31220 Claude Monet – Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies, such as colour variations of the plates within the ‘water’ feature that mirror his way of layering strokes of paint. In the central section, a diagonal stroke of light that has a prominent place in the original painting has also been rendered in LEGO bricks, with lighter elements running from the top right to the bottom left.
As part of the set's overall experience, builders will be able to listen to an exclusive podcast featuring Metropolitan Museum of Art curator, Alison Hokanson, delving into Monet’s inspiration and artistry.
LEGO Art 31220 Claude Monet – Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies will be available to buy for LEGO Insiders from March 1 and for everyone else from March 4, retailing at £179.99 / $249.99 / €199.99.
