The original LEGO Classic Space inspiration for 10355 Blacktron Renegade has been enhanced with a number of modern upgrades, as revealed by the set’s designer.
LEGO Icons 10355 Blacktron Renegade was officially revealed today, with the 1,151-piece set recreating a pair of classic Space models from the ‘80s. Priced at £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99 , the upcoming build blasts off on January 1 for Insiders members, while everyone else can grab the ship from January 4.
10355 Blacktron Renegade offers LEGO Classic Space fans reworked versions of both 1988’s 6876 Alienator and 1987’s 6954 Renegade, but with a 1.5x scale reinterpretation of the main vessel. The ship has also gained a number of impressive modern upgrades, as revealed to New Elementary by the set’s designer, Jae Won Lee.

“The original has the six modules,” explained Jae, “and the new one also has six modules: cockpit, communication unit, hyper boosters, vehicle, mainframe and the one-person speeders. We changed the [original style of] connections on the Blacktron Cruiser, because we needed to make them stronger than before.”
“in the original one, the main function is a way to add a small vehicle into the cargo,” said Jae, “but I needed something new for the new Renegade. I just really like the dropship!”

The LEGO designer also revealed that there are some hidden extras beneath a flat hexagonal element at the front of 10355 Blacktron Renegade that tap into the sub-theme’s sinister faction.
“We have a laser blaster with the cameras, because in LEGO Space history, the Blacktron are kind of spying, and intercept some telecommunications,” Jae says. “So those are the kinds of modules that I really wanted, to put some cameras for spying.”

In addition, the LEGO designer also added extra value to 10355 Blacktron Renegade’s alternate build, an updated version of 6876 Alienator.
“At the time, the Alienator had a very simple walker system,” Jae elaborated. “It’s just two turntables, just on plates. To me it was very innovative, so I just tried to make the function very simple.”

“After I designed this walker, I felt it need something new for this set. So I designed this repair mechanic.”
You’ll be able to get to grips with all that 10355 Blacktron Renegade has to offer when the ship is released on January 1 exclusively for Insiders members. The LEGO Icons model will then receive a wider release and be available to all from January 4.
