The LEGO Disney murals, built in celebration of the brand's 100th anniversary, feature characters from throughout the century, but a few have special significance to the artist.
Each 4.5m mural, built from exactly 220,000 bricks each, features an array of characters, chosen specifically by the LEGO Group, Disney, and artists Lakwena Maciver, Amy Jones and Kristin Texeira. Speaking to Creative Bloq, Maciver also revealed that, while the figures selected are designed to represent the wide variety of the last ten decades of Disney, several hold personal significance to her.
"Some of the characters held a significant place in my personal history, for instance, Winnie the Pooh, whose stories were inspired by the Ashdown Forest where my cousins grew up, and where we would go on walks when I visited," Maciver explained. "And now, with my young family, films like The Lion King and the character Simba, which is featured in my mural, offer a nice way for me to talk to my children about our ancestral homeland.
"We wanted to show a range of the iconic characters from the last 100 years, but also include characters that I had a personal connection to," she continued. "For example, Princess Tiana who was the first black princess is a very significant character to me so it was important that I included her in one of my murals."
These murals mark the first time that Maciver has ever had her work replicated in LEGO bricks. The pieces of art have been made in collaboration with members of the public, with those in Manchester and Paris already built and the New York one due to be completed between July 28 and 30. Once completed, the four LEGO Disney murals will all be on display at the LEGO House in Billund from 23rd August 2023.
