LEGO display takes 31208 Hokusai – The Great Wave to a whole new level

A museum display in Boston has expanded LEGO Art 31208 Hokusai – The Great Wave to a whole new level.

Bostom's Museum of Fine Arts recently launched Hokusai: Inspiration and Influence, an exhibition dedicated to Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai. One of the centrepieces of the collection was a sprawling brick-built version of Hokusai's famous Great Wave – but on a far larger scale than what's on offer within the LEGO Art theme.

More than 200 pieces of art are on display, created by friends, teachers, fans, and others connected to Hokusai. Many are interpretations of Great Wave, just like the LEGO masterpiece picture below. It was built by LEGO Certified Professional Jumpei Mitsui and shared online by Reddit user roadtrip-ne on the LEGO subreddit.

Looking more closely, another Reddit user also added some closer images in the comments, giving a better sense of how the boats are dynamically placed on the ebbs and flows of the waves.

It is, of course, on a greater scale than LEGO Art 31208 Hokusai – The Great Wave, but it still stays close to the original structure, with one large wave on the left and three boats bobbing among the smaller swells. You can see the display yourself, among many other representations of Hokusai's work by attending the exhibition. Tickets are available now for $27, or concessions for $10.
