LEGO doubled down on gaming in 2025. Did it pay off?

LEGO doubled down on gaming in 2025. Did it pay off?

The LEGO Group went all in on video game-related products in 2025, so was it a gamble that ultimately paid off or merely a brave experiment over the last year?

As the Brick Fanatics team looks back at yet another busy year for the LEGO Group in 2025, it’s clear that the Danish company experienced plenty of highs and lows over the past 12 months. One particular area where we’ve seen real growth though has been gaming, with everything from new physical and digital products to exciting announcements and partnerships.

The LEGO Group recently celebrated 30 years of video games, with over 200 titles having been created since LEGO Fun to Build was released in 1995, a digital offering created in collaboration with SEGA.

LEGO 30 Years of Games

Since then, the LEGO Group has continued its ongoing push into gaming, with 2025 having been its busiest year to date. With that in mind, we’re taking a look back over the last 12 months to reveal the LEGO video game successes and stumbles encountered along the way, and what the year ahead looks like for the company in 2026.

LEGO Animal Crossing

It was a relatively quiet year for LEGO Animal Crossing in 2025, with only seven sets launching that were based on the Nintendo video game. However, what models were released still managed to deliver some fan-favourite minifigures, such as Mabel, Sasha and Celeste, as well as adding the long-awaited 77056 Blather’s Museum Collection to the theme.

Recent rumours suggest that LEGO Animal Crossing may potentially be slowing down in 2026, with only one promotional polybag currently hinted at arriving in the months to come but no clues so far as to what it might be.

LEGO BrickHeadz

Only a couple of LEGO BrickHeadz sets inspired by a video game arrived this year and both of them were spun out of Fortnite. 40884 Drift & Raven Figures and 40760 Adventure Peely & Cuddle Team Leader were solid additions to the long-running theme though, with the latter available as a GWP with specific spends.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight

One of the biggest announcements of 2025 was the reveal of LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. Although the high-anticipated TT Games title won’t actually drop until May 29, 2026, it’s arrival will be accompanied in advance by four LEGO DC sets that each include unlock codes for in-game content.

76330 Batman Logo, 76331 Batman v Superman Batmobile, 76332 The Batman Batmobile and 76333 Batman & Robin Batmobile are due to launch on March 1, giving fans plenty of time to assemble the models ahead of the release of LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight.

LEGO Fortnite

Gamers hoping to see more LEGO Fortnite in 2025 were rewarded with a quartet of summer sets that delivered four unique builds. The highlight of that line-up was easily 77078 Mecha Team Leader, a 2,503-piece model that proved to be one of the most impressive additions to the theme so far, with rumours of at least four more models said to follow in August 2026.

It wasn’t just physical LEGO Fortnite sets that received a boost in 2025 either. A huge NINJAGO: Rise of the Ninja update was released for the LEGO Fortnite game mode, bringing with it new elemental abilities, weapons, builds, premium rewards, minifigure outfits, and regular Fortnite skins for Kai, Jay, Cole and Zan, plus the promise of a second content drop sometime in 2026.

LEGO DREAMZzz

Not to be left out this year was LEGO DREAMZzz, with the homegrown theme benefitting from a number of video-game themed releases. Those included 30698 Cooper’s Flying Controller Mini Build, 71489 Cooper’s Gaming Controller Jet, 71490 Izzie and Bunchurro the Gaming Bunny.

Despite rumours of the potential demise of LEGO DREAMZzz, an additional five sets have already been confirmed for January 1, 2026, although none of the builds appears to be tapping into this year’s big video game push.

LEGO Exclusives

A couple of unique and exciting LEGO exclusives popped up in 2025, with the first of those being 40805 Arcade Machine. The model managed to pack plenty of retro video gaming details inside its brick-built cabinet and proved to hit the high score when reviewed by our very own Matthew back in September.

Also of note was 40769 SEGA Genesis Controller, a 260-piece 1:1 scale replica of the classic peripheral. In fact, the LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog release was easily one of the best GWPs of the year, if you were lucky enough to snag the freebie with all LEGO purchases of £115 / $130 / €130 or more that is.

LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog

Speaking of SEGA’s spiky blue mascot, the LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog theme continued to go from strength-to-strength in 2025, thanks to a selection of solid video game releases. A total of eight such models launched throughout the year, bringing with them new vehicles and minifigures, with two more sets spin dashing into view on January 1, 2026 and a promotional polybag also rumoured to be on the way in the months to come.

LEGO Horizon Adventures

Revealed all the way back in 2024, 77037 Aloy & Varl vs. Shell-Walker & Sawtooth finally dropped on March 1 of this year. Despite only one set based on the LEGO Horizon Adventures video game having been released so far, it was a solid enough build, managing to successfully bridge the gap between the game’s junior target audience and feeling like a natural continuation of the 76989 Horizon Forbidden West: Tallneck, a model aimed at more mature fans of the Sony franchise.

LEGO Minecraft

LEGO Minecraft had yet another bumper year in 2025, no doubt bolstered by the release of A Minecraft Movie. Three waves arrived from the theme across the year, including two models based on the Jack Black film in the shape of 21272 Woodland Mansion Fighting Ring and 21273 The Ghast Balloon Village Attack, plus fans were also treated to the first-ever LEGO Minecraft advent calendar.

The video game theme will be coming back strong again in 2026 too, thanks to eight new LEGO Minecraft builds launching on January 1, 2026, as well as another 10 models that are rumoured to be arriving throughout next year.

LEGO Super Mario

Two of this year’s stand-out releases were delivered courtesy of LEGO Super Mario in the shape of 72037 Mario & Standard Kart (plus 40787 Mario Kart – Spiny Shell GWP) and 72046 Game Boy. Both builds managed to push the video game theme to even greater heights, while still being supported by a selection of brick-built interactive playsets and vehicles,

However, things are currently looking a little quiet for LEGO Super Mario in 2026, with just one 18+ set rumoured to potentially be on the way sometime in April and no sign of any other models so far...

LEGO Party

With the exclusive rights for creating licensed LEGO video games now in the hands of multiple developers, players have been able to try out at a variety of different digital titles of late. That includes LEGO Party, which was developed by SMG Studio and published by Fictions. The multiplayer offering includes 60 fun minigames, wacky Challenge Zones and content based on such LEGO themes as Pirates, Space, NINJAGO and more.

LEGO Voyagers

Alternatively, there’s LEGO Voyagers, a decidedly different two-player cooperative game featuring platforming and puzzle challenges experienced as LEGO pieces. Developer Light Brick Studio and publisher Annapuma Interactive delivered a much more chilled out title in 2025, one that continued to receive content updates throughout the year.

The best of the rest

The LEGO Group spread its gaming wings far and wide in 2025, across multiple themes, platforms and media. For instance, Cal Kestis from the Star Wars Jedi series made an appearance as a minifigure in LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past, voiced once again by Cameron Monaghan.

Not to be outdone, a series of LEGO Ideas challenges dropped that were centred around video games, such as the Build What Your Avatar Wants and the Brick or Treat contests (the latter tied to LEGO Fortnite), and various gaming make and takes were available from LEGO Stores.

LEGO Pokémon

While 2025 has indeed been a banner year for the LEGO Group and gaming, it could potentially be well-surpassed by what’s on the way in 2026. In addition to everything mentioned above, there was an official announcement of LEGO Pokémon sets finally being released, with as many as 20 models already rumoured to be launching in the next 12 months.

That potential line-up is said to include everything from a promotional polybag right up to 72153 Bulbasaur, Squirtle & Charmander at a whopping 6,938 pieces. Those possible releases will not only represent one of the largest LEGO video game theme launches to dates, but also perfectly coincides with Pokémon’s 30th anniversary in 2026.
