Spoiler alert: the LEGO designers behind next month’s 21356 River Steamboat have called out all the set’s Easter eggs and references to its fan designer.
Aaron Hall (also known as CTDPower on LEGO Ideas) was responsible for taking the concept of a steamboat to 10,000 votes on the crowdsourcing platform, ultimately paving the way for it to sail on to store shelves in April. LEGO Ideas designers Jordan Scott and Marina Stampoli then transformed his pitch into 21356 River Steamboat, and made sure – as is often the way for LEGO Ideas sets – to incorporate a couple of nods to Aaron in the model.
You’ll spot most of those in the boat’s interior, which is fully decked out with rooms including a crew cabin, restaurant, bathroom, kitchen and museum. First up is a picture of the Rocky Mountains with an A-frame cabin, which Marina told New Elementary is ‘the fan designer’s wife’s favourite place to go’. It’s located in the entrance to the restaurant, alongside a poster for The Breckin Band.
The name of that musical outfit is a reference to Aaron’s son Breckin, while the date of their show is also the date of Aaron’s wedding anniversary. The stage is home to another nod to Aaron’s family, too. “On the drums we have a red Northern Cardinal bird, which is one of the symbols of Illinois in the US where the fan designer is from,” Marina added. “When we showed him that he was very excited, because the bird also has a special meaning for his wife.”
While these references will likely fly over the head of anyone without the foreknowledge of them while building the set, they’re – as always – a neat inclusion for the fan designer responsible for putting the concept in front of the LEGO Ideas review board. In the case of 21356 River Steamboat, that also happens to have been the concept for the biggest LEGO Ideas set of all time (so far).
