The fan designer behind the upcoming 21363 The Goonies has revealed how his love for a specific theme resulted in his LEGO Ideas submission.
Nostalgic fans of the ’80s will have plenty to get excited about next month when 21363 The Goonies sails into view. The 2,912-piece set is based on a winning LEGO Ideas challenge design by Vaggelis Ntezes, also known as Delusion Brick, and represents a love letter to the beloved Richard Donner film.
In a new interview on the LEGO Ideas blog, Vaggelis has talked about what inspired him to create what would ultimately become 21363 The Goonies and how designing the movie model tapped into a LEGO subject matter close to his heart.

“My favourite theme of all time is Pirates,” Vaggelis revealed. “With the Pirates sets, one’s imagination can fly and you can have different, unique stories and adventures in a beautiful tropical place full of mystery. I consider the 1989 Pirates sets as one of the best LEGO creations that has affected me not only consciously but subconsciously as well.”
That nostalgic affection for the classic theme led the fan designer to submit his own piratical creation to last year’s ‘If We Could Turn Back Time’ challenge, with a huge amount of effort going into the film-based LEGO Ideas model.

“I did a lot of research around the movie,” Vaggelis explained. “I discovered the deleted scenes, like the one with the octopus, and took several photos so I could have them on hand during the design process. This way, I could observe the details and make decisions on what to include or discard from the set.”
That thought process also presented the designer with one of the model's biggest challenges, a hurdle that had to be overcome in order to present the LEGO Ideas submission as one cohesive build.
“My biggest concern was figuring out a way to combine the ship and the caves without making them two separate models,” said Vaggelis. “So as I began designing the caves, my first idea was to place the movie logo on the back side. However, I quickly dismissed that idea and thought I could use the ship.

“It was the most challenging part of the process, but I knew that if I managed to pull it off, I would create a model that offered both playability on one side and display value on the other, making it truly unique as a concept.”
21363 The Goonies will launch early for LEGO Insiders on November 1, complete with an exclusive GWP (while stocks last), followed by a wider release for all on November 4. The upcoming LEGO Ideas set will be priced at £269.99 in the UK, $329.99 in the US and €299.99 in Europe.
