LEGO is introducing yet another new collection in 2024 (and we are here for it)

The LEGO Group is introducing yet another new collection in 2024, potentially pulling together sets from across different themes – and we are here for it.

The current LEGO portfolio is split first into top-level themes, then subthemes, and – as of 2020 – product collections. Think the Botanical Collection, Modular Buildings Collection, Fairground Collection, Winter Village Collection, and so on. Early precursors to those groupings include Star Wars’ Ultimate Collector Series and Master Builder Series.

And so far, most (if not all) of them have linked together a series of sets within a single theme. Those usually fall under LEGO Icons, formerly Creator Expert, which is otherwise a broad and disparate group of products traversing everything from playsets and vehicles to buildable flowers and feats of architectural prowess.

In 2024, the LEGO Group is kick-starting a brand new assortment of sets titled ‘The Fauna Collection’. The first of these is the newly-revealed 31211 Macaw Parrots, a LEGO Art set that once again pivots to a new direction for a theme that once consisted solely of mosaics. The 644-piece set includes a pair of pastel parrots designed to be displayed on a wall.

This is the first time a LEGO Art set has fallen under a ‘collection’ banner, but the real question now is: will the Fauna Collection be limited solely to LEGO Art, or will it collect together sets from a wide range of themes? The LEGO Group has leaned into animals plenty of times across its history, and more recently in the Creator 3-in-1 theme in sets like 31129 Majestic Tiger and 31150 Wild Safari Animals.

These collections, however, are almost exclusively the reserve of 18+ sets (of which 31211 Macaw Parrots is one). So those Creator 3-in-1 models wouldn’t make the cut: instead, we’d presumably be looking at more detailed versions designed for adults. What the future holds is a total mystery for now, but if the Fauna Collection does cross-pollinate with multiple themes under its hat, it wouldn’t be the first branding exercise to do so in 2024.

LEGO sets from across City, DREAMZzz, Technic, Creator 3-in-1, Friends and DUPLO are all carrying a new ‘Space’ label next year, binding them all together with a common identity – even while they all explore vastly different approaches to the theme of space. The Fauna Collection could well do something similar for 18+ sets related to animals in 2024.

We’ll find out for sure later next year, if and when more LEGO sets under the Fauna Collection materialise. But if the LEGO Group is planning to do for animals what it’s done for flowers under the Botanical Collection – which continues apace in 2024 with 10328 Bouquet of Roses – we are very much here for it. And 311211 Macaw Parrots looks to be a great starting point…
