LEGO Marvel fans left 'disappointed' at reveal of Captain America: Brave New World sets

The early reveal of two LEGO Marvel sets has given us a proper look at two new versions of Captain America, but some fans have been left disappointed.

Thanks to the first official images published by Smyths Toys, both 76292 Captain America vs. Red Hulk Battle and 76296 New Captain America Construction Figure now have full galleries of images, showcasing the minifigure playset and the buildable character for the first time. However, fans have been quick to point out a key difference between Sam Wilson's Captain America and Steve Rogers'.

Where 76258 Captain America Construction Figure had a printed face element that showed some of his face, 76296 New Captain America Construction Figure does not. The same goes for the Captain America minifigure in 76292 Captain America vs. Red Hulk Battle, where the helmet covers the entire head, which is printed blue underneath.

That contrasts with what we've seen of Sam's on-screen Captain America costume, which typically shows him wearing goggles similar to what he wore as the Falcon, leaving the top of his head and jawline exposed.

The full masking of Sam Wilson's face and therefore skin colour is being criticised by fans, especially coming after Anthony Mackie's first storyline as Captain America was centred around Sam finding his place as a Black Captain America. PenPlays took to X to call the design "weird."

Another person, crab_milker on reddit, described the costume as "a regression," adding: "Sam went from having his own style to trying to copy Steve's style as much as humanly possible. It sucks that the other suit only appeared for part of the last episode of a miniseries."

Over on Instagram, more people are noticing the fully-helmeted cap, with andrewhuygen writing on one Instagram post: "Is no one else noticing the fact that we aren’t getting a helmet-less Cap head in either set?" "If Sam doesn't come with an unmasked head, then that's disappointing," echoed mighty.morphin.geeky.dude elsewhere on Instagram.

Seeing as we haven't seen Sam Wilson in full in Captain America: Brave New World – and won't until February 14, 2025 – the minifigure and buildable character could be accurate to a fully-helmeted on-screen look. The sets have already been plagued with issues due to the accompanying movie being delayed.

Nonetheless, considering Sam Wilson as Captain America has had the foundations laid to be a role model for Black children, with an arc within the MCU closely tied to his race, it perhaps would have been apt to have an alternate printed face element in 76296 New Captain America Construction Figure or an alternate head in 76292 Captain America vs. Red Hulk Battle.
