LEGO Minifigures Series 29 spotlight: Bionicle Cosplayer

LEGO Minifigures Series 29 is bringing back Bionicle and revisiting cosplay, taking the spotlight in our latest in-depth feature on the new series.

The most nostalgic and the minifigure with the most fanservice in 71052 Series 29 is none other than the Bionicle Cosplayer. It's practically destined to be the most desirable and popular of the 12 minifigures in 71052 Series 29.

The nine-piece minifigure recreates Tahu's first figure in minifigure form, featuring a new piece for the character's iconic mask, and even comes with accessories for his sword and his canister packaging.

From the front, it's simply Tahu as a minifigure, but from the back, the cosplay aspect of this minifigure becomes clear. There's a headband holding the mask in place, allowing the eyes to feature that distinct pink hue. Otherwise, this cosplay is high-quality and hard to differentiate from the character.

“It hits on two challenging aspects. First, Bionicle, then second cosplay," said Graphic Designer Tore Magelund Harmark-Alexandersen to Brick Fanatics at Fan Media Days 2025.

"If you do a cosplay elf warrior in a collectable minifigures series, it’s just going to look like an elf warrior. Where’s the cosplay aspect? Unless we do it in a rough way. So we thought marrying the two was a perfect solution, and having the little canister that they were originally in underlines that story.”

That canister is featured in the 71052 Series 29 minifigure, using a single stud on top of a cylinder piece. It's a similar tactic to Blazey Hyper Speed's accessory in 71799 Ninjago City Markets, but without the dark red statuette and with bonus printing for the canister's artwork.

The cosplay aspect of the Bionicle Cosplayer is more hidden than it needs to be, which is sure to be appreciated by Bionicle fans. Swap that grey head for a transparent pink variant, and you'll have a minifigure Tahu with no cosplay features to be seen.

This is just the latest return of Bionicle in the modern LEGO portfolio, now seemingly reserved for one-off appearances by Tahu and the occasional Takua. Following the end of the theme's recent reboot, such smaller references may be the best path for the theme's future.

The Bionicle Cosplayer will be available as part of 71052 Series 29 in a blind box for £3.49 / $4.99 / €3.99. You can use the Brick Search app's minifigure scanner to find your Bionicle Cosplayer minifigure before the series retires later this year. The app is available to download now on Android and iOS.
