LEGO's new US facility will reduce wait times and supply delays

The LEGO Group has broken ground on a new facility in Virginia, designed to reduce lead times and respond to demand shifts quicker.

Work has begun on the LEGO Group's two-million-square-foot regional distribution centre in Prince George County, near Richmond, Virginia in the US. The company has invested more than $360 million in the facility as part of an ongoing strategy to support long-term growth in the region, coming hot on the heels on the new manufacturing centre that finished construction just 20 miles away last month.

Both facilities are due to open in 2027 and will enable the LEGO Group 'to respond faster to shifts in demand, reduce lead times, shorten the supply chain, and reduce its environmental impact'. In terms of the impact on fans, being able to respond faster to demand and reduce lead times essentially translates to not having to wait on sets to be delivered.

Indeed, the US does seem to be facing more issues on that side of the world than the UK and Europe, with 45 sets on back order in America compared to just 17 in the UK and 15 in Germany and France, for example. Presumably, improved facilities and growth in the region would seek to reduce the amount of sets American fans are waiting on.

LEGO Group Vice President of Supply Chain Operations for the Americas, Cindy Sikora and other top Virginia state and local officials and key partners attended a groundbreaking ceremony at the new facility.

“Our regional distribution centre will strengthen our supply chain network across the Americas, helping us bring LEGO play to more fans and retail partners efficiently and reliably," said Cindy. "We are grateful for the ongoing collaboration we have had with partners across the Commonwealth of Virginia who support our ambition to build this distribution centre.”

As well as with a focus on efficiency, the distribution centre is being built with the LEGO Group's sustainability goals in mind, with plans to use 100% renewable energy to power the site, as well as use electric vehicles to transport goods between the facility and LEGO Manufacturing Virginia.
