LEGO Pokémon to get trading card set, and you can design it

Another LEGO Pokémon set has been officially confirmed, as a result of an upcoming LEGO Ideas contest based on the trading card game.

The LEGO Group's partnership with Pokémon has expanded to LEGO Ideas to one day result in a Pokémon Trading Card Game model. The LEGO Group is looking for enthusiasts to submit creations to the platform inspired by a Pokémon trading card, one of which will be selected to become an official set.

The rules are that your submission must be based on one of a specific list of fan-favourite Pokémon, as listed on the challenge page. Some of the highlights include Alolan Exeggutor, Normal-type Arceus, Dragonite, Gardevoir, Lucario, Metagross, Mew and Mewtwo. There are 30 Pokémon to pick from, all listed on the challenge page. Your model must be based on a full-art Pokémon trading card, similar to the examples below.

It can use between 400 and 2,500 pieces and should be a card with a frame, showcasing the Pokémon appropriately. It's up to you how to portray Pokémon and the frame of the card, as long as the face of the Pokémon must be clearly visible in the upper half of the card. The final important rule to keep in mind is that no minifigures can be in your submission. You have until May 6 at 6:00am EST to submit your entry.

It's an interesting move from the LEGO Group to explore the popular trading card game so soon into the partnership. However, this set is unlikely to be released for some time due to the nature of the contest and its processes. That process includes a fan vote of five selected submissions on May 28, one of which will win the challenge.

There will be one grand prize winner in this contest, who will see their model turned into an official set, with the usual credit and compensation for LEGO Ideas. Every model that makes it to the fan vote phase will see their user take home 72151 Eevee, 72152 Pikachu and Poké Ball, 21358 Minifigure Vending Machine, 21365 Love Birds and 21376 Orange Cat.
