LEGO Sauron returns as a minifigure in 11373 The Lord of the Rings: Sauron's Helmet, making it a lot cheaper to get your hands on the rare character.
Prior to this, Sauron had only appeared as a minifigure in LEGO Icons 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr, but now the very same version of the character is set to appear in 11373 The Lord of the Rings: Sauron's Helmet, due for release on March 1. That's judging from the product images available so far, unless there's something new going on under the helmet.
That's exciting news for a number of reasons. Firstly, the LEGO Icons set is styled after LEGO Star Wars and Marvel helmet collection sets, which haven't included minifigures before. Secondly, it makes it a lot easier and cheaper to get your hands on the Sauron minifigure.
While 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr retails for £399.99 / $459.99 / €459.99, 11373 The Lord of the Rings: Sauron's Helmet is a fraction of the price at £64.99 / $69.99 / €79.99. Of course, you get a lot more than just Sauron in the 5,471-piece set, but for those who were after the minifigure in particular but didn't have the budget or space for the towering Barad-dûr, this will be welcome news.
After all, even trying to hunt down the Sauron minifigure on its own on the secondhand market sets you back £62.17 on average for a new copy of the minifigure, according to BrickLink data. That's almost the full price of 11373 The Lord of the Rings: Sauron's Helmet for the minifigure alone. Even for used minifigures, the average price is £38.50, more than half the RRP of the upcoming model.
We can likely expect the price of Sauron on the LEGO secondhand market to drop significantly now that there's this lower point of entry. When the Phase II Captain Rex minifigure from 75367 Venator-class Republic Attack Cruiser reappeared in 75391 Captain Rex Y-Wing Microfighter, the average aftermarket price of the once-rare minifigure fell from £81 in November 2023 to £40 in May 2023. Today, the average price for the minifigure sits at around £8 on BrickLink, underlining the dramatic drop in value.
While 11373 The Lord of the Rings: Sauron's Helmet is not quite as cheap to bulk-buy as 75391 Captain Rex Y-Wing Microfighter with its £11.99 price tag, the upcoming LEGO Icons set is sure to make it both easier and cheaper to add Sauron to your minifigure collection.
