LEGO Shopping Street designer talks set’s ‘aesthetic driven process’

The designer behind 11371 Shopping Street has revealed what his creative approach was when it came to assembling the next LEGO Modular Buildings Collection set.

The next release in the LEGO Modular Buildings Collection is due to arrive early next year in the 3,456-piece shape of 11371 Shopping Street. The upcoming LEGO Icons release has already proven somewhat divisive amongst the wider fan community, but it's worth noting that the set's designer had a very clear vision of what the model should be during its development.

In a recent interview with Tips & Bricks, Hoang Huy Dang talked about his personal path to creating 11371 Shopping Street, the architectural style of the building, its unique colour scheme and much more.

“I usually lend myself within a team to solving challenges here and there, balancing technical challenges and aesthetics,” explained Hoang. “To put my mind at ease, I did some concept sketches for modular buildings. It got chosen to go through and I ended up designing this modular!

“My design process is different from one project to another. For this model, there was less technical difficulty, besides the angular shaping. So once we figured that out, I worked digitally to move stuff around and change colours here and there, for more of an aesthetic driven process.”

Hoang also talked about the way that the LEGO Modular Buildings Collection design team approaches the architectural look of each individual set and what the direct real world influences were on 11371 Shopping Street.

“When it comes to style, the designer of whoever leads the project influences it,” said Hoang. “For me, I took a trip to cities I love – one of them is Copenhagen. I took pictures of details and the vibe and how people use spaces.

“But it’s not specific in the way you can tell where each modular building is from in real-life. All modular buildings belong in one timeline that can’t be too recent or too old – they belong to the same period in a way.”

When it came to 11371 Shopping Street’s colour scheme, Hoang revealed that a conscious decision was made to avoid clashing with another LEGO Modular Buildings Collection set, resulting in the use of specific long-dormant bricks.

“We tested many colour iterations,” Hoang stated. “We do studies that put colour choices next to each other and next to the previous modular. [10350] Tudor Corner is a very colourful building, so coming off that we wanted a muted, more neutral colour scheme. Instead, we made the [minifigure] characters colourful!”

11371 Shopping Street is due to launch for Insiders first on January 1, 2026. It will be accompanied by 40913 Vintage Parade Car, a free GWP with all purchases of £180 / $200 / €200 and over between January 1 and 11 (while stocks last). The LEGO Icons model will then receive a wider release from January 4, with the set priced at £229.99 in the UK, $249.99 in the US and €249.99 in Europe.
