The LEGO Group has officially revealed their next big project, SMART Play, with Bluetooth-connected pieces to change the way fans play.
Showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show moments ago, LEGO SMART Play aims to enhance play by adding electronic interactivity to standard LEGO models through the use of three kinds of new electronic elements and a Bluetooth protocol.
The interactive platform uses the Bluetooth-based BrickNet protocol, which will share data between SMART Play elements to make normal sets more interactive. Examples shown include knowing the results of LEGO car races, noise-making minifigures and much more.
“For over 90 years, the LEGO Group has sparked imagination and creativity in children around the globe. As the world evolves, so do we— innovating to meet the play needs of each new generation. LEGO SMART Play is the next exciting chapter in our LEGO System in Play and something we are super excited about being able to bring to the world at this scale,” said Julia Goldin, Chief Product & Marketing Officer of the LEGO Group.
The new electronic elements in this platform include the main SMART Brick itself, similar to a standard two-by-four element but with more height, an enhanced minifigure with electronic components and the tile-resembling LEGO SMART Tag. The main SMART Brick will need to be charged via an official charger.
Tom Donaldson, Senior Vice President & Head of Creative Play Lab at the LEGO Group, added, “The launch of LEGO SMART Play brings creativity, technology, and storytelling together to make building worlds and stories even more engaging, and all without a screen. We truly believe we are setting a new standard for interactive, imaginative experiences and can’t wait to see this innovation in the hands of kids when we launch this year.”
A video demo of LEGO SMART Play has been provided to showcase just how this new way to play works, and how it changes the standard LEGO experience.
LEGO SMART Play is confirmed to debut in a trio of new LEGO Star Wars sets launching on March 1, with pre-orders open later this week. Stay tuned for any further LEGO SMART Play news as the LEGO Group continues to explore this innovation.
