These movie cars would shake up LEGO Speed Champions

LEGO Speed Champions is leaning into movie magic in 2026 – and there's plenty more cinematic inspiration left on the table.

Come January 2026, LEGO Speed Champions will launch 77255 Lightning McQueen and 77256 Time Machine from Back to the Future, two movie-themed car sets. Dipping into film inspiration is nothing new for the theme, but it does seem that Speed Champions is getting more creative with its movie-magic fodder.

Previous cinematic LEGO Speed Champions sets have picked out iconic vehicles from James Bond and the Fast and Furious franchises, recreating cars that, although they've been seen on the big screen, also exist in real life. With 77255 Lightning McQueen and 77256 Time Machine from Back to the Future, there's a little more creativity going into the fictional cars.

That opens up more doors for other famous cars that could join the LEGO Speed Champions theme, shaking up the theme into uncharted territory.

A-Team Van

The A-Team van wouldn't need too many changes from its core GMC Vandura design to recreate the movie look on a Speed Champions scale. The black and red paint job and extra lights on the roof are a must, as well as potentially some Easter eggs tucked into the back of the van as accessories. The appetite for the car is certainly already there among LEGO fans, gaining 10,000 supporters on LEGO Ideas three times over.

With 77256 Time Machine from Back to the Future bumping the usual solo minifigure up to a duo, a Speed Champions A-Team set would also seem like it's skimping if it didn't include the full A-Team. A set of four minifigures would be quite the increase compared to the typical Speed Champions set, but worth it to make it a real tribute to the iconic film.

Herbie

The LEGO Group already works with Disney on various franchises, so perhaps a LEGO Speed Champions Herbie wouldn't be too much to hope for. There's already been a brick-built VW Beetle under the Creator Expert banner with 10252 Volkswagen Beetle, but never on this scale.

Again, Herbie's defining features wouldn't be too tricky to replicate, coming down largely to the bodywork, rather than any major buildable changes, making it an easy slam dunk for the LEGO Speed Champions theme.

KITT from Knight Rider

While KITT from Knight Rider is not from a movie but rather a TV show, it's perhaps one of the most iconic '80s cars out there. The 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am was dubbed the Knight Industries Two Thousand, shortened to KITT, and starred in many hair-raising action sequences.

Many of KITT's best features are hidden within the car itself, including its supercomputer abilities, but the overall look is incredibly sleek. It certainly wouldn't look out of place next to other Speed Champions sports cars.

Mario Karts

Of course, we've already got LEGO Mario Kart sets, but beefing them up to a Speed Champions scale, with all the extra scope for detail and accessories that the theme entails, would be an enticing way to upgrade the sets still further. The LEGO Group knows there's an appetite for display-ready models as well as play sets, as we've seen with 72037 Mario Kart – Mario & Standard Kart – so why not on a Speed Champions scale?

While it might be tempting to start with the basic Standard Karts for the main characters, it would be especially fun to see some more varied vehicles, like the Wild Wiggler or the Cat Cruiser. Those are just a couple of options, but the LEGO Group has virtually endless combinations to dip into. The more they made, the more you could swap wheels and parachutes between them as well.

Transformers

The LEGO Group has already proven it can nail the magic of Transformers in brick form, but what about on a Speed Champions scale? We might be asking for the moon to expect them to be able to switch between the two modes at that size. If it could be pulled off, however, it's sure to be a storming success.

This could also be an avenue to explore some of the lesser-known Transformers that are unlikely to ever get an Icons set, but still hold a special place in the community's hearts, like Ratchet, Trypticon, and the rest.

Both 77255 Lightning McQueen and 77256 Time Machine from Back to the Future are available to pre-order now ahead of their release on January 1, 2026, retailing at £22.99 / $27.99 / €27.99.
