The LEGO Movie co-director and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse co-writer Phil Lord says he’s ‘regretting not making’ the superhero sequel entirely in LEGO, in response to a phenomenal fan edit.
The tongue-in-cheek tweet came after Twitter user LegoMe_TheOG shared their take on Across the Spider-Verse’s second trailer, recreated entirely in LEGO bricks. It’s the second time the 14-year-old artist has tackled a trailer for the upcoming animated film, with the first racking up 231,000 views on YouTube. Their latest clip has already amassed 151,000 views since landing online yesterday.
Phil Lord – who co-wrote Across the Spider-Verse, a follow-up to 2018’s Into the Spider-Verse, with The LEGO Movie collaborator Chris Miller – quote-tweeted the LEGO trailer, adding: “Regretting not making the whole movie this way.” This obviously doesn’t mean we’re going to see a full LEGO Spider-Man movie, but it’s fun to imagine what that might look like. But wait! We don’t have to! Just check out the edit below…
It’s a stunning recreation, no doubt – and one that might just be a bit closer to reality than you’d first expect. Among the many different universes that feature in Across the Spider-Verse will apparently be one dedicated to LEGO Marvel (as revealed by Peter B. Parker voice actor Jake Johnson), though – in the style of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness or Everything Everywhere All at Once – it sounds like we’ll only get a brief glimpse at it.
If Lord was able to do the movie all over again, who knows? Maybe that LEGO universe would get a bit more time in the spotlight. Unfortunately, the rights for full LEGO cinematic releases are currently with Universal rather than Sony, so don’t expect a full LEGO Spider-Man outing any time soon.
