Retiring LEGO Harry Potter sets guide: buy now, wait or skip?

Retiring LEGO Harry Potter sets guide: buy now, wait or skip?

Our latest guide to this year’s retiring LEGO sets weighs up whether to buy, hold out on or skip each of the 16 LEGO Harry Potter models leaving shelves in 2025.

As with our previous guides to Star Wars, Icons and Ideas’ retiring sets, we’ll consider whether you should buy each of these sets as soon as you have the funds available (or there’s a decent gift-with-purchase/double points event at LEGO.com), wait for a decent discount on them (around Black Friday, for example), or skip them altogether in favour of something else.

Check out each retiring LEGO Harry Potter set below, and head here to find a complete list of all LEGO sets retiring in 2025.

75978 Diagon Alley

LEGO Harry Potter 75978 Diagon Alley lifestyle resized featured 1024x576

The oldest LEGO Harry Potter set retiring this year is 75978 Diagon Alley, a sprawling street of shops situated across four 16x32 baseplates. This is the Collectors’ Edition version of the Wizarding World location (even if the LEGO Group hadn’t conjured up that name yet in 2020), compared to the smaller playsets the LEGO Harry Potter theme has been pumping out for the past few years.

It’s one Wizarding World fans were requesting for a good while before it landed on shelves, and still holds up five years on. We’re probably not going to see anything on the scale of this again for Diagon Alley for a very long time, and given it’s exclusively available through official channels, discounts have been rare – so it’s one to grab as soon as possible if it’s on your wishlist, especially if you want to pair it with Gringotts.

76391 Hogwarts Icons Collectors' Edition

LEGO Harry Potter 76391 Hogwarts Icons Collectors Edition FEATURED 2 1 1024x576

This is a relatively easy one to call, because it’s pretty unlikely we’ll ever get anything like 76391 Hogwarts Icons Collectors' Edition ever again (and if we do, it’ll probably be a bunch of different buildable objects rather than this precise selection). And it’s such an effective execution of this ambitious idea – including the nearly-life-size Hedwig – that it could really be the centrepiece of any LEGO Harry Potter Collection.

The three exclusive golden 20th-anniversary Harry Potter minifigures are all worth a good chunk of change on the aftermarket too, and only likely to rise in price once it retires, so you should definitely take the plunge if you want those (or if you can sell them to offset the cost of the rest of the set). And with one eye on how long it’s been around without any kind of discount, it’s tough to see it going on sale soon…

76421 Dobby the House-Elf

LEGO Harry Potter 76421 Dobby the House Elf lifestyle 2 featured 1024x576

The good thing about LEGO Harry Potter’s buildable characters is that they’re generally very affordable (at least compared to their Star Wars equivalents, for example). 76421 Dobby the House-Elf is cheap enough to be an impulse buy… but has also been widely discounted enough to make it worth waiting for a deal before taking the plunge. It’s not what you’d call a must-have Potter set anyway, so no need to worry too much if you don’t get round to buying it before it retires.

76423 Hogwarts Express & Hogsmeade Station

To buy 76423 Hogwarts Express & Hogsmeade Station or not to buy 76423 Hogwarts Express & Hogsmeade Station? Well, it all depends how much you like this particular interpretation of the train, which is the first to include two carriages rather than just one, because it’s all but guaranteed we’ll get another crack at it before long. It’s one of a few Harry Potter staples that’s never off shelves for too long – and a future version could be even better than this one…

76425 Hedwig at 4 Privet Drive

LEGO Harry Potter 76425 Hedwig at 4 Privet Drive featured 1024x576

While some Harry Potter buildable characters are aimed at older builders or wider audiences, 76425 Hedwig at 4 Privet Drive is very much one for the younger fans out there, priced and designed as such. It’s not a bad set by any means – it knows its brief and delivers on it – but it’s also destined to be forgotten in the grand scheme of Wizarding World releases, so makes for an easy skip now.

76426 Hogwarts Castle Boathouse

LEGO Harry Potter 76426 Hogwarts Castle Boathouse featured 1024x576

The same principle applies to every LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle set on this list that’s part of the current modular format: if you want to complete ‘the most detailed Hogwarts ever’, as the LEGO Group is billing it, you’re going to want to grab it before it retires. But most of them, including 76426 Hogwarts Castle Boathouse, are generally available with discounts through third-party retailers, so seek out one of those before paying full price.

76427 Buckbeak

LEGO Harry Potter 76427 Buckbeak featured 1024x576

What is there to say about 76427 Buckbeak? You’ll probably already know whether you want it by now, and if you haven’t snapped it up already it’s not really worth worrying about this late into its lifespan. Buildable creatures like this one don’t tend to rise in value too rapidly on the aftermarket, so even if you change your mind later, you should still be able to add it to your collection for a reasonable price.

76428 Hagrid's Hut: An Unexpected Visit

LEGO Harry Potter 76428 Hagrids Hut An Unexpected Visit featured 2 1024x576

Another LEGO Harry Potter icon that’s sure to be revisited somewhere down the line – perhaps even before the decade is out – 76428 Hagrid's Hut: An Unexpected Visit is one set you could theoretically skip for now… but the particular execution of this one will be hard to top in future. It’s fully-enclosed, includes some desirable minifigure variants and is also fertile ground for turning into a generic medieval dwelling. One to consider at a discount.

76430 Hogwarts Castle Owlery

LEGO Harry Potter 76430 Hogwarts Castle Owlery lifestyle featured 1024x576

See above vis-à-vis Hogwarts Castle additions: don’t pass up on it altogether if you’re collecting them, even though 76430 Hogwarts Castle Owlery is a standalone structure that doesn’t physically connect to the rest, but do try to find it on sale somewhere as it’s not necessarily worth full price.

76431 Hogwarts Castle: Potions Class

LEGO Harry Potter 76431 Hogwarts Castle Potions Class featured 1024x576

If you’re going to skip any of the Hogwarts Castle sections, an additional classroom – which slots into the base of the Great Hall and replaces one of the existing rooms there – is probably the easiest to pass up. 76431 Hogwarts Castle: Potions Class does include some neat elements though, so there are points of interest beyond just the wider combo.

76433 Mandrake

LEGO Harry Potter 76433 Mandrake featured 1024x576

If any LEGO Harry Potter set was going to include a sound brick, be grateful it wasn’t this one. Nobody needs to hear 76433 Mandrake wailing in real life. But you might just want to build it, especially because it’s been readily available at a third or even half off since debuting, and it’s a nice Botanicals-adjacent set if you’re looking for something a little kookier to add to that collection.

76434 Aragog in the Forbidden Forest

LEGO Harry Potter 76434 Lifestyle featured 1024x576

Yes, this is technically the best and most accurate Aragog yet, but the LEGO Group returns to the eight-legged well so often that we’re again almost guaranteed to get another one of these at some stage. (Also: arachnophobes will find it an easy one to scroll on by, eyes shut tight.) 76434 Aragog in the Forbidden Forest is cheap enough to advise buying now if you desperately want it, but otherwise your budget is better spent elsewhere.

76439 Ollivanders & Madam Malkin's Robes

LEGO Harry Potter 76439 Ollivanders Madam Malkins Robes featured 1024x576

Anyone collecting the smaller-scale Diagon Alley sets should make a beeline for 76439 Ollivanders & Madam Malkin's Robes before 2025 is out, because any builds that are part of a wider collection like this one are unlikely to be revisited again (at least for a very long time, and certainly not in exactly the same way). So that recommendation below is for those collectors specifically – if you’re not already on board with these sets, it’s a skip.

76440 Triwizard Tournament: The Arrival

LEGO Harry Potter 76440 Triwizard Tournament The Arrival featured 1024x576

It took the LEGO Group nearly 20 years to revisit the Durmstrang Ship in 76440 Triwizard Tournament: The Arrival, so chances are it’ll be a good long while before we see this one again. It comes in at a pretty epic size too (even with the Beauxbatons Carriage also in the box), so it’s a solid execution of the concept, and one to grab while you can…

76441 Hogwarts Castle: Dueling Club

LEGO Harry Potter 76441 Hogwarts Castle Dueling Club featured 1024x576

Another Hogwarts Castle section that’s relatively easy to pass up given it subs in for the dining tables in the Great Hall, 76441 Hogwarts Castle: Dueling Club does have one string in its bow that might make you take a second look: its exclusive and well-executed Gilderoy Lockhart minifigure. He’s not worth the full entry price alone, though, so hold out for a discount.

76456 Advent Calendar 2025

LEGO Harry Potter 76456 Advent Calendar 2025 featured 1024x576

Not all LEGO advent calendars sell out straight away or even before the year is out, but Harry Potter’s seasonal sets tend to do pretty well. They do occasionally get discounted even at LEGO.com, but for the avoidance of doubt (and given it’s a pretty cheap set in the grand scheme of things), probably best to snap 76456 Advent Calendar 2025 up when it debuts on September 1 – or pre-order one now – if you’re interested.
