A first, tiny image of a new LEGO Airplane set has debuted in a safety regulation document, and it’s giving pure ‘80s and ‘90s vibes.
The promotional 5010053 Airplane can be seen in this publicly-accessible declaration of conformity document at LEGO.com, and consists of 151 pieces with two minifigures in the box. The packaging follows the same format as 18+ sets and gifts-with-purchase – black with a single-colour brick border along the bottom edge – and features a large ‘special edition’ badge.

According to BrickTap, this set will be a gift-with-purchase available exclusively at LEGO Stores in airports, and while that seems credible given the subject matter it’s yet to be confirmed by the LEGO Group. The good news for those who don’t frequent airport stores is that it doesn’t appear to use any exclusive elements (at least at first blush) so should be simple enough to recreate at home.
And you may want to do so depending on your age and affinity with classic LEGO, because this feels plucked straight out of LEGO Town’s flight subtheme from the 1980s and 1990s. The blocky construction techniques, large plates for the wings and slopes around the cockpit are positively retro compared to the airplanes that fly out of Billund under the LEGO City banner these days.
We’ll bring you official confirmation on 5010053 Airplane’s availability as soon as we get it, but in the meantime keep an eye out next time you’re travelling just in case…
