Rumoured LEGO Icons Space Shuttle & 747 Plane isn't entirely new

LEGO Icons' rumoured 10360 Space Shuttle Discovery & 747 Plane would be familiar territory for the LEGO Group, thanks to a single Town set.

A recent rumour from an anonymous source re-reported by the generally reliable Clay_Bricks claims that the 2,417-piece 10360 Space Shuttle Discovery & 747 Plane will debut on May 15 for $229.99. This would presumably recreate the modified plane that transported shuttles from their landing sites back to the Kennedy Space Center from 1974 to 2011.

The modifications that these planes underwent to be able to carry the shuttles are extensive, and after years of recent NASA models, the plane would be a welcome addition to diversify the range, while pairing nicely with 10318 Concorde. That's not to say that this is entirely new territory for the LEGO Group, though.

6544 1

Thanks to LEGO Town's Launch Command range in 1995, 6544 Shuttle Transcon 2 has already recreated a simplified version of these planes and shuttles with 342 pieces 30 years ago. Three decades later, the LEGO Group is rumoured to be giving the modified planes the set they deserve with a much larger piece count, but almost certainly eschewing any kind of minifigure compatibility to keep the scale accurate.

The fact that the rumoured 10360 Space Shuttle Discovery & 747 Plane is stated to be coming 30 years after this initial shuttle plane set is notable, and it will be interesting to see whether or not this is intentional, should the rumour be accurate.

Beyond the official portfolio, the online LEGO community are all too familiar with the modified aircraft too, with several different fan-made builds recreating the 747 plane and a shuttle on top.

DamoB's version uses around 1,000 fewer parts than the rumoured set, while sabi_wabi's model is at nearly a tenth of the size.

As the LEGO Group's partnership with NASA is rumoured to continue, we'll have to see how well the official and custom models compare to the rumoured set, should the rumour be accurate. In the meantime, take everything unconfirmed with caution just in case. Here's what else is rumoured and confirmed for LEGO Icons later this year.
