Five useful pieces and prints in LEGO Project Hail Mary set

Five useful pieces and prints in LEGO Project Hail Mary set

The LEGO Project Hail Mary set pays tribute to the movie adaptation of Andy Weir’s sci-fi novel, and includes some useful recolours and prints.

LEGO Icons 11389 Project Hail Mary is our first and likely only model based on the film adaptation of the titular book, depicting the Hail Mary spacecraft with a built-in Technic mechanism. It's a fairly niche topic for a LEGO set, launching on March 1, 2026, for £99.99 / $99.99 / €99.99.

Rest assured that those outside the target audience for this build can still find a fair amount of love in this build, though, thanks to a mix of rare and new recolours and an endlessly useful printed piece.

New colour: a red jet pack

After appearing twice in 2020's 75266 Sith Troopers Battle Pack, the minifigure jetpack with a built-in stud is back after six years in red. 11389 Project Hail Mary won't be ideal for army-building, but we can only hope that this element finds its way to Pick a Brick in the months to come.

Rare colour: the palm tree top in white

More exciting is that the classic LEGO palm tree top piece is back in white for the first time in 19 years. The retro element has only appeared in five sets between 1999 and 2007, but with at most two pieces per model.

11389 Project Hail Mary is bringing the part back in this rare colour, with at least two of them in the LEGO Icons set. It's another part that we hope will land on Pick a Brick over the next year.

New colour: a red and black astronaut helmet

The LEGO City astronaut helmet with dual-moulded colours is also present in a new colour in 11389 Project Hail Mary. You can find the piece in red and black as part of the movie model, used as part of the spacesuit on Ryland Grace's minifigure.

New colour: a lime green LEGO Technic hoop

The 11 x 11 Girder element that debuted in 2021 has appeared in four colours across just nine sets so far, but a fifth colour and 10th entry are about to join those lists. 11389 Project Hail Mary features the piece in lime green as part of the Technic mechanism in the set to send the crew module into orbit, simulating the spaceship’s centrifugal gravity system.

This is a new colour for the element, which also represents the atmosphere of Tau Ceti e from the movie. The use of this element may be perceived as limited to LEGO Technic models, though it has been used as decoration in several retired models, including 60421 Robot World.

New print: a LEGO tape measure

Of all the new prints in 11389 Project Hail Mary, one has caught our eye more than any other. Ryland Grace's minifigure can be seen holding a tape measure printed on a one-stud tile in the LEGO Icons set. The tool has only been depicted in a few other LEGO decorations, none of which can be held in a minifigure's hand.

This particular print will find plenty of use in scenes across various collections. As a smaller printed tile, 11389 Project Hail Mary is likely to follow in the footsteps of most other models and include a spare of this printed piece.

You can pre-order 11389 Project Hail Mary right now, ahead of its release date on March 1, 2026. Look out for our review before then.
