What can you remove for the LEGO Ideas Twilight set?

New rumours about the LEGO Ideas Twilight set suggest a much smaller piece count than was pitched, leaving us to wonder what can be cut.

Instagram user a.clay.brick reports that the upcoming LEGO Ideas Twilight model may be coming to shelves on February 1, 2025, for $219.99 with 2,001 pieces. Considering the recent release of 21353 The Botanical Garden, that rumoured release date isn't too surprising but should still be taken with caution.

What's more surprising is the rumoured piece count since the original project by Nick Micheels features 2,995 pieces – nearly one-third more elements than that which is reported for the official design. That can only mean one of two things should this rumour be true – parts of the pitched build are being cut or the model is a lot smaller than expected.

Assuming that the mansion will still be minifigure-scale since licensed minifigures are common in LEGO Ideas and they would need a place to be displayed, here are a few features of the original model that may not be in the official set, based only on the recent rumour.

The back wall

While Nick Micheels proposed a complete mansion model on LEGO Ideas, other recent LEGO mansion models have eschewed a back wall for a dollhouse-like design. LEGO Ideas has adopted this concept before including in 21351 The Nightmare Before Christmas but has similarly released complete buildings such as in 21338 A-Frame Cabin and 21341 Disney Hocus Pocus: The Sanderson Sisters' Cottage.

Still, there's some precedent for open-back buildings in LEGO Ideas and the concept works well for mansion models. Cutting this wall in a model as big as was pitched would cut out much of the piece count too.

The brick-built werewolf

A side build pitched for the LEGO Ideas Twilight set depicted a brick-built werewolf and it seems similarly likely that such a build might not be on the table for the official design to save on pieces.

That said, the wolf figure evidently wouldn't need too many pieces and could always be downsized to keep the model while reducing the piece count. These creatures and the transformation are important to the Twilight movies too.

The tree

The giant tree at the back of the building is one of the most likely cuts from the official set based on this rumour. While the wooded location is important in the film. it must add a lot to the piece count in the fan-designed project alongside the rest of the landscaping.

Either the tree needs to be cut entirely or similarly downsized to stick closer to the rumoured piece count. Keeping it would provide an opportunity for more Easter eggs and a nice natural break from the mansion during the building process though.

The landscaping

Keeping the tree but allocating it to its own detached base would provide an opportunity for the designers to cut back on the surprisingly extensive landscaping out front and at the back of the pitched mansion design. Picture something akin to the gate in 21341 Disney Hocus Pocus: The Sanderson Sisters' Cottage.

Instead, something similar to 31153 Modern House would be more in line with other LEGO Ideas sets while unfortunately downsizing the impressive footprint of the fan-created model. Realistically though, this part of the set seems likely to be cut at least somewhat even without the rumoured piece count as LEGO Ideas sets rarely feature square bases, curving the footprint and conserving space where possible.

All of this is only speculation based on the rumour and while we know that a LEGO Ideas Twilight set is coming eventually, nothing more is known about the build at this time. Click here to see what else is in production for LEGO Ideas.
